Our Vision

New Grocery Movement envisions a world where power and resources are shared equitably throughout the food system so that every community has access to sustainable, local, joyful and just food.

NGM was born from the mission to empower communities to reimagine groceries and build food sovereignty through education, connection and collaboration.

  • Support

Act as a resource and support hub for designing and developing community-driven spaces and methods for accessing food

  • Connect

Create networks to build collective power and spaces for solution-building and collaboration

  • Advocate

Provide an inclusive platform to elevate community calls for food justice and transformative systems change

  • Educate

Share knowledge about our food system and the importance and process of shifting to accessible, local, sustainable and just food

NGM is guided by the following values in pursuit of our mission:

  • Justice

  • Accessibility

  • Empowerment

  • Sustainability

  • Community

A note on Land Acknowledgements

At NGM, we do not believe land acknowledgements should end with the recognition of the traditional Indigenous lands on which we reside. Instead, we believe it is an opportunity to open a conversation on our further calls to action: to give gratitude to the Indigenous people of this land for their resilience in sharing it as we continue to make it home, often without permission; to dive deep into learning and understanding the historical context and present day continuation of the colonization and genocide of this land and its people; and, to create meaningful action items outlining how the land will be given back. As we build this movement on stolen land, these calls to action remain at the forefront of our mind. We encourage you to explore them as well, and reach out if you want to learn more or have ideas about their intersection in NGM’s plans.

We invite you to join us in reimagining what groceries could look like in your community
