NGM welcomes all applicants to join the Garden Club! However, as a youth-run organization, we are committed to supporting youth, especially equity-deserving youth, that may have historically experienced exclusion from growing spaces. If you self-identify as an equity-deserving person and/or youth, we strongly encourage you to apply!
NGM is committed to helping communities find ways to source sustainable and local food, while building food sovereignty. With the uncertainty in supply chains from Covid-19 paired with the increasing grocery inflation crisis, the need for alternatives to commercial grocery stores has never been more pressing. Growing your own food is one of the best ways to have consistent access to sustainable and local food, but there are many barriers to getting started. NGM wants to make growing your own food more accessible by offering community members the opportunity to garden with support – by covering some expenses, providing physical assistance and knowledge with basic gardening tasks, sharing gardening resources, tools and growing materials, and promoting our growing successes!
We are looking for community members from the Edmonton, AB/Treaty 6 Territory area to garden alongside NGM for the 2024 May - October growing season in a Pop Up community garden in the Ritchie neighbourhood.
HOW TO APPLY
NGM is offering the opportunity to secure a growing space and cover basic gardening expenses in order to make growing food more accessible to the Edmonton community. In short, it’s an initiative to help more people get started on growing their own food by providing the tools, the seeds, the space and the knowledge to begin gardening. NGM is committed to supporting the new gardener throughout the season as best they can, through the sharing of knowledge and resources.
What can be expected as a grower with the NGM Garden Club for the 2024 season:
Access to a 2’ x 3’ water-saver planter
All of the soil, water, seeds, seedlings, tools and gardening materials needed to grow food
Workshops and events to deepen food systems knowledge and food growing skills
Opportunities to create and strengthen connections with like-minded youth and community members
A bounty of sustainable and local food, grown by you!
***Please Note: Applications are only open to community members that can commit to a full growing season. NGM is only offering this program in the Ritchie neighbourhood of the Edmonton/Treaty 6 area for the 2024 May - Oct. growing season.
